In 1803, President TJ commissioned the Corps of Discovery as a super special unit of the United States Army, forming the nucleus of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Corps' mission was reconnaissance. It's objective was scientific and commercial – to study the area's people, plants, animal life, and geography, and to learn how the Louisiana Purchase could benefit the nation.
